Overview
Brine Shrimp Eggs, commonly known as Artemia cysts, are dormant eggs that can be hatched to produce live brine shrimp. They are one of the most popular live foods used by freshwater and marine aquarists, particularly for raising fry and conditioning breeding fish. Newly hatched Artemia nauplii are extremely small and highly nutritious, making them ideal for many species of young fish and other aquatic animals.

Hatching Artemia is straightforward once the correct salinity, temperature, aeration, and lighting conditions are established. Consistent preparation and good-quality cysts will generally produce the best hatch rates.

Environment Type: Saltwater for hatching
Container: A clean bottle, hatchery cone, or dedicated Artemia hatchery
Temperature: Ideally 26–28°C
Salinity: Approximately 25–35 g of marine salt or non-iodised salt per litre of water
Aeration: Strong, continuous aeration is recommended to keep the cysts suspended and provide oxygen

Hatching Method

1. Prepare the Water: Mix suitable salt into dechlorinated water to create the required salinity.

2. Add Aeration: Provide vigorous aeration to keep the cysts continuously circulating throughout the water column.

3. Add Cysts: Add an appropriate amount of Artemia cysts to the hatchery. Avoid excessive quantities, as overcrowding can reduce oxygen availability.

4. Maintain Temperature: Keep the hatchery around 26–28°C for consistent results.

5. Wait for Hatching: Depending on the cyst quality and conditions, nauplii will generally begin appearing within 18–36 hours.

6. Harvest: Turn off the aeration and allow the water to settle for several minutes. Empty cyst shells will generally collect near the surface while newly hatched nauplii concentrate towards illuminated areas.

7. Feed: Collect the nauplii using a fine brine shrimp net or suitable siphon, rinse them with clean freshwater, and feed immediately.

Primary Use: Live Artemia nauplii for fish fry and small aquatic animals
Best For: Newly free-swimming fry, juvenile fish, small tropical fish, and breeding adults
Adult Fish: Larger fish can also benefit from larger Artemia as part of a varied diet

Behaviour and Development
Once hatched, Artemia emerge as tiny free-swimming nauplii. They are attracted to light and actively swim through the water column, making them highly stimulating prey for fish fry.

As Artemia grow, they develop through several stages and can eventually reach several millimetres in length. Newly hatched nauplii are generally the most useful size for very small fish fry.
