Cherry Shrimp Care Guide
Neocaridina davidi — an in-depth guide to setting up the right environment, maintaining stable water, feeding, moulting, breeding and building a healthy colony.
Cherry Shrimp at a glance
Cherry Shrimp are the red colour form commonly sold in the aquarium trade under the species name Neocaridina davidi. They are small freshwater shrimp that spend much of their time grazing surfaces, exploring plants and hardscape, and foraging for tiny food particles.



Understanding the species
Neocaridina davidi is a small freshwater atyid shrimp. The aquarium trade has produced many colour forms and grades through selective breeding, with red Cherry Shrimp among the most familiar.
The species has direct development: young hatch as miniature shrimp rather than passing through a free-swimming marine-like larval stage. This makes reproduction in freshwater aquariums possible when conditions are suitable.
Small size does not mean low sensitivity. Stable water quality, appropriate mineral availability and protection from predators are central to long-term success.
Setting up the aquarium
A mature aquarium with established biological filtration is a much better home than a newly filled, unstable tank. A mature aquarium also provides biofilm and microscopic food on its surfaces.
Tank size
Cherry Shrimp have a low individual bioload, but tiny aquariums are less forgiving of evaporation, temperature swings and dosing mistakes. For beginners, stability is more important than choosing the smallest possible tank. OATA recommends selecting a suitably sized aquarium and notes that larger volumes are generally more stable.
Water parameters
Cherry Shrimp tolerate a reasonably broad range, but stability is extremely important. Avoid changing suitable water simply to chase a target number.

Hobbyist sources give somewhat different GH, KH and TDS ranges. Treat those as practical references rather than universal requirements. Test your source water first and, when it is suitable, prioritise consistency.
The aquarium must be cycled
Cherry Shrimp should never be used to “test” a new aquarium. Establish the nitrogen cycle first and verify that ammonia and nitrite remain at zero.
A mature filter provides surfaces for nitrifying microorganisms. Do not judge maturity by a fixed number of days; test the aquarium and confirm that it can handle its intended biological load.
Filtration and water flow
Cherry Shrimp benefit from clean, oxygenated water and gentle circulation. The filter should provide enough movement for oxygenation while leaving calmer grazing areas.
Protect tiny shrimp
Newly hatched shrimp are extremely small. Use an intake sponge or appropriately fine pre-filter where necessary so juveniles cannot be drawn into the filter.
When maintaining biological media, avoid washing established media under untreated tap water where chlorine or chloramine is present. OATA recommends lightly rinsing filter media in removed aquarium water to reduce loss of beneficial bacteria.
Plants, biofilm and hiding places
A planted Cherry Shrimp aquarium creates a three-dimensional feeding and shelter environment. Shrimp naturally graze microscopic organisms and organic material from surfaces.
Feeding Cherry Shrimp
Cherry Shrimp are constant foragers. In a mature aquarium, much of their day can be spent picking at biofilm and tiny particles from plants, glass, wood, rocks and substrate.
Supplementary feeding
Offer a quality shrimp food or suitable sinking food in small quantities. Algae-based foods can form part of a varied diet. Start small and observe how quickly food is consumed.
Minerals and diet
A balanced diet supplies nutrients for growth and reproduction, while suitable mineral availability in the water supports normal exoskeleton formation. Do not automatically add mineral products without first understanding your GH and source water.
Moulting
Shrimp grow by periodically shedding their rigid exoskeleton. After a moult, the new exoskeleton is initially softer, so a shrimp may hide more than usual.
Finding an empty translucent “shell” is therefore usually not a dead shrimp; it can simply be the discarded exoskeleton.
Why moulting problems can occur
Problems may be associated with poor or rapidly changing water conditions, inadequate mineral availability, stress and other husbandry issues. Avoid making sudden chemistry changes when you see a moult.
Male vs female
These are tendencies rather than guarantees. Young shrimp can be difficult to sex and breeding lines vary.
Breeding Cherry Shrimp
Once established, Cherry Shrimp can reproduce readily. A female carries developing eggs beneath her abdomen on her swimmerets.
Eggs develop
Eggs develop in the ovaries and may appear as a saddle behind the head.
A receptive female moults
Males may become unusually active as they search for a newly moulted female.
Eggs are carried
Fertilised eggs are attached beneath the female and tended with her swimmerets.
Young hatch as miniature shrimp
N. davidi has direct development. Published laboratory work recorded egg incubation of about 16–19 days under its experimental conditions; actual timing varies.
Juveniles forage
Young shrimp need mature surfaces, biofilm and suitably small food particles. Dense plants and moss improve refuge opportunities.
Tank mates
Cherry Shrimp are peaceful, but peaceful does not mean safe. Their small size makes them vulnerable to fish that can fit shrimp or shrimplets into their mouths.
Copper, medications and chemicals
Freshwater shrimp are invertebrates and can be highly sensitive to copper-based treatments. OATA specifically warns that Cherry Shrimp are highly sensitive to copper.
Never assume a medication is shrimp-safe because it is marketed for aquariums. Check the active ingredients and manufacturer's compatibility information before dosing.
Acclimating new Cherry Shrimp
The goal is to transition shrimp gradually from transport conditions to the aquarium while avoiding sudden temperature or chemistry changes.
Prepare first
Confirm the aquarium is cycled, stable and ready before opening the transport container.
Match temperature
Avoid sudden temperature differences.
Gradually introduce aquarium water
Use a controlled acclimation method appropriate to the difference in water chemistry and supplier instructions.
Minimise transport water
Where practical, avoid adding unnecessary transport water to the established aquarium.

Colour grades
The trade uses names such as Cherry, Sakura and Fire Red to describe colour intensity and breeding lines. These are hobby and commercial descriptors, not separate species.
Colour is influenced by genetics, sex, age, stress, diet, background and individual condition. If breeding for colour, select healthy adults with the traits you want and maintain a stable colony.
